Govt to label polluting companies<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The government plans to measure companies' compliance
\nto protect the environment by labeling them with the colors blue,
\ngreen, red and black to help consumers identify environmentally
\nconscious companies from polluters.<\/p>\n
\"Companies showing the most serious concern in protecting the
\nenvironment will get a blue label, and those that are less
\nconcerned will get a green one,\" said Minister of Environment
\nNabiel Makarim on Friday. \"And those companies that neglect or
\ndamage the environment will get a red label or a black one if
\nthey are among the worst.\"<\/p>\n
He said he hoped that environmentally conscious consumers
\nwould purchase products from like-minded companies and refuse to
\nbuy those from companies that heavily pollute the environment.<\/p>\n
Nabiel said his ministry had identified 90 companies that
\noperated in a way that could threaten the environment.<\/p>\n
Environmental concern among local companies has always ranked
\nlow, but it took a further backseat when the economic crisis hit
\nthe country in 1997.<\/p>\n
Attention to this issue has slowly risen thanks in part to
\npressure from environmental watchdogs and Indonesia hosting a
\nUnited Nations meeting on sustainable development last year. --
