Govt to improve teachers' welfare<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri said on Monday that
\nthe government would continue to make efforts to improve the
\nwelfare of the country's teachers.<\/p>\n
\"If the financial situation can support it, the government
\nintends to increase teachers' salary,\" she said during a ceremony
\nto mark National Teachers' Day at the state palace.<\/p>\n
Megawati said the government's ability to improve the lot of
\nteachers by increasing their salaries was still limited.<\/p>\n
The government last month agreed to increase teachers' monthly
\nallowances by Rp 56,250 to Rp 87,500. It also agreed to pay an
\nadditional Rp 75,000 per month in allowances to temporary
\nteachers and teachers in private schools.<\/p>\n
\"These increases in teachers' allowances were accomplished in
\nspite of limited financial resources,\" she said.<\/p>\n
In her speech, the head of state expressed her gratitude for
\nthe loyalty and devotion shown by Indonesian teachers.<\/p>\n
\"We deeply appreciate and give thanks for our teachers' noble
\nservice and devotion in carrying out their roles by empowering

BANDUNG: Some disgruntled students of the Bandung Institute of
\nTechnology (ITB) have written to U.S. President George W. Bush to
\nwarn him against perceived meddling in Indonesia's internal
\naffairs.<\/p>\n
In their letter, handed to US Ambassador to Indonesia Ralph L.
\nBoyce while the latter was visiting the ITB campus on Monday, the
\nstudents urged the U.S. to stop pressuring other countries and
\nseeking to act as \"the world's policeman\".<\/p>\n
They also asked Bush to stop what they described as the U.S.'s
\ndesire for hegemony and domination in the fields of ideology,
\npolitics, economics and culture.<\/p>\n
During the visit to the ITB campus, Boyce was accompanied by
\nthe U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Counselor, Greta N. Morris, and
\nPolitical Officer John T Rath.<\/p>\n
They met with the chairman of the institute's board of
\ntrustees, the students' union chairman and lecturers who had
\nstudied in the U.S.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, the US ambassador paid a visit to West
\nJava Governor R. Nuriana at the latter's office.<\/p>\n
A source in the West Java administration said the closed-door
\nmeeting between Boyce and Nuriana focused on increasing U.S.

Expert warns of big volcanic bang<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: An expert said here on Monday that Mount Papandayan
\ncould still stage a major eruption.<\/p>\n
\"Although only small eruptions and tremors have been recorded
\nover the past several days, a big eruption could still happen,\"
\nvulcanologist Mas Atje Purbawinata warned.<\/p>\n
Concurring, the chief of the Rapid Response Team urged people
\nto stay away from the mountain as \"it is not impossible that a
\nmajor, life-threatening eruption could happen.\"<\/p>\n
He made the statement after being informed that many people
\nwere entering the danger zone surrounding the mountain.<\/p>\n
He said that although notices had been put up banning people
\nfrom coming within four kilometers of the volcano, people
\nnevertheless persisted in doing so.<\/p>\n
Rain was reported to have fallen on the mountain and caused
\nvolcanic debris and mud to move in the direction of the Cibereum
