Govt to help worker facing execution in Saudi Arabia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will soon dispatch a lawyer to
\nhelp Indonesian worker Dimyati Usro who has reportedly been
\nconvicted and sentenced to death for the murder of his wife,
\nJumanah, in the oil-rich country of Saudi Arabia, Minister of
\nJustice Muladi said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Honestly, I have no idea about the case, because I've just
\nbeen a minister for a week. But we will help him get his rights,
\nand I will ask the Indonesian Bar Association (Ikadin) to send
\nits lawyers,\" Muladi was quoted by Antara as saying in Semarang,
\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
Separately, the news agency also reported yesterday from
\nMataram, West Nusa Tenggara, that Dimyati's daughter, Dewi
\nSartikawani, pleaded with the government to make an all-out
\neffort to save her father from being beheaded.<\/p>\n
\"Please help me save my father from being beheaded,\" pleaded
\nthe teary 15-year-old junior high school student in her shanty in
\nGubuk Derek village, 50 kilometers east of Mataram.<\/p>\n
Dimyati's plight gained media attention over a week ago along
\nwith an Indonesian maid, Warni binti Sawiran, who is facing a
\npossible death sentence for allegedly bludgeoning her employer to
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
Under Saudi Arabian law, murder is punishable by death. The
\nsentence is usually carried out by beheading.<\/p>\n
Muladi said that under an international convention on the
\ndeath penalty, a defendant is given the right to defend him or
\nherself until the last minute before execution.<\/p>\n
According to Antara, Dimyati is currently being held on death
\nrow in Al Islaiyah prison in Mecca.<\/p>\n
Under Saudi Arabian law, Dimyati's death sentence can only be
\nreversed if there is a pardon from the murdered's family.<\/p>\n
Last year, Indonesians were shocked when they learned that a
\nmigrant worker, Solehah Anam Kadiran, had been beheaded in Mecca,
\nSaudi Arabia, in September.<\/p>\n
She had been convicted of killing her employer.<\/p>\n
People were even more outraged when they learned that Nasiroh
\nKarmudin, another female Indonesian worker in Saudi Arabia, was
\nalso about to be executed for a similar crime.<\/p>\n
Intensive diplomatic efforts worked in Nasiroh's favor and she
\nescaped the death penalty after one of the murdered man's wives
\npardoned her.<\/p>\n
Given the large number of problematic Indonesian workers in
\nSaudi Arabia, the government launched a massive airlift in
\nNovember to bring 24,000 workers home.<\/p>\n
There are about 600,000 Indonesians working legally in Saudi
\nArabia. Most of them are women.<\/p>\n
Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have the highest number of
\nIndonesian workers outside the country. (aan)<\/p>",
