Govt to establish hospitals for work-related accidents<\/p>\n

Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob Nuwa Wea met
\nRiau Governor Rusli Zainal here on Tuesday to make the Petala
\nBumi Hospital into a special health center for workers.<\/p>\n
The move was part of a plan to make five hospitals in the
\ncountry special centers for work-related accidents.<\/p>\n
Nuwa signed a similar agreement with Nursaha Delima, director
\nof the Delima General Hospital in Medan, North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
The three other hospitals are in Cirebon, West Java; Makassar,
\nSouth Sulawesi; and Sorong, West Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
The minister said the workers' hospitals were in response to
\nthe low quality of medical services provided by state-owned PT
\nJamsostek for workers under existing healthcare programs.<\/p>\n
\"Most workers have been disappointed with Jamsostek's
\nprograms. Sick workers are required to go to public health
\ncenters with limited services and the treatment they receive in
\nhospitals is also limited.<\/p>\n
\"Jamsostek's healthcare programs are not helpful,\" Nuwa Wea
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said the government had allocated Rp 10 billion from
\nnumerous sources, including Jamsostek, to buy the five hospitals'
\nmedical services for workers in the five provinces.<\/p>\n
Nuwa Wea and Jamsostek have been at odds over the planned
\nestablishment of the workers' hospitals. Jamsostek had earlier
\nopposed the minister's plan. It said it had no skills or
\nexperience in managing or monitoring hospitals and the
\nestablishment of special hospitals for workers was inefficient.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Jamsostek president Achmad Junaidi confirmed on
\nWednesday Jamsostek had put aside a part of its profits in 2003
\nto help finance the hospitals.<\/p>\n
\"We decided to help the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry
\nestablish the five hospitals as part of its commitment to improve
\nworkers' social welfare and health conditions after gaining
\napproval from the government,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Junaidi said Jamsostek would not take part in managing the
\nspecial hospitals because the company had no experience in
\nmanaging them.<\/p>",
