'Govt to blame for migration'<\/p>\n
In a bid to keep unskilled migrant workers out of Jakarta, the
\ncity administration is planning to raid residential areas where
\nthey are suspected of living. Some observers have raised concerns
\nabout the policy, arguing that it violates people's rights of
\nmovement guaranteed under the Constitution. The Jakarta Post
\ninterviewed two people on Wednesday for their views on the issue.<\/p>\n
Frans Thamura, 30, is an IT consultant and open-source
\nsoftware advocate. He lives in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
I don't think it's fair for the city government to make
\nurbanization illegal, particularly because (the government) has
\nnever created a comprehensive program to develop human resources
\nin other regions.<\/p>\n
IT in the regions, for example, is far behind that of Jakarta,
\nso much so that you can't make a living from IT in the regions.<\/p>\n
Why can't the government ever be fair towards people in the
\nregions? Why won't government officials think about regional
\ndevelopment rather than their own stomachs? They should be
\nashamed of themselves.<\/p>\n
Afif Farisi, 25, is a Masters Degree student at the University
\nof Indonesia majoring in information and technology. He lives in
\nCibubur, Depok.<\/p>\n
Well, I think it puts migrants in a dilemma. On one hand they
\nneed money to survive, and Jakarta is by far the best place for
\npeople to look for money.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, migrants don't realize that with their
\nlimited living skills, Jakarta can instead mean disaster, and not
\nonly for these people but also for the city administration.<\/p>\n
But I don't think raids and dragnets are the answers, these
\nmethods only create new kinds of \"criminals\".<\/p>\n
I think the best way is to evenly distribute the circulation
\nof money across the country. If the government could be more
\ndaring in decentralizing businesses and the government, and could
\nconvince investors that the regions are also lucrative areas for
\nbusiness, perhaps things would be different then.<\/p>\n
