Govt to ban poor quality wheat flour products<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Industry and Trade will withdraw four brands of
\nimported wheat flour from the local market as each failed to meet
\ngovernment standards, a top official said.<\/p>\n
\"Ibu Rini Soewandi (Minister of Industry and Trade) has
\napproved our proposal to withdraw the four brands from the
\nmarket,\" Erni Rifana, director general for domestic trade at the
\nministry told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.<\/p>\n
She said that the four brands, including Kuda and Kokaburu,
\ndid not carry labels issued by the national standardization
\nagency of Indonesia (SNI). She could not name the two other
\nbrands.<\/p>\n
\"The four brands which are mostly sold in traditional markets
\nin Palembang province did not meet the SNI standard,\" Erni said.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the government would also revoke the license of
\nthe importers, Erni said it would be decided by the directorate
\ngeneral of foreign trade affairs.<\/p>\n
Erni said her office will soon report the decision to the
\ngovernor of Palembang.<\/p>\n
Her office had been conducting an investigation into 11 brands
\nof imported wheat products from India, Australia, China and
\nMalaysia following complaints from consumers. But so far, only
\nfour brands had been recommended to be withdrawn from the market.<\/p>\n
The team had been carrying out investigations in a laboratory
\nto ensure that the contents of the products were in line with the
\ngovernment standard.<\/p>\n
It said that the products did not contain healthy nutrient
\nrequirements such as zinc and other vitamins.<\/p>\n
The ministry had previously issued a decree supervising
\nproducts sold at local markets. The move was part of efforts to
\nimplement Law No.8\/1999 on consumer protection.<\/p>\n
Under Article 8 of the consumer protection law, producers and
\ntraders are banned from producing and marketing products and
\nservices that do not meet the standard set by the government.<\/p>\n
Producers and traders also are forbidden from deceiving
\nconsumers by falsifying the quality of their products.<\/p>\n
The move was also aimed at curbing the massive influx of
\nsmuggled products into the country.<\/p>",
