Govt to announce color-coded rankings in pollution program<\/p>\n

The government expects to complete the evaluation and ranking
\nprogram of companies (PROPER) next month, and is aimed at
\nmonitoring whether or not their activities endanger the
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
Hermien Roosita, deputy assistant for manufacturing,
\ninfrastructure and service at the State Ministry of the
\nEnvironment, said her office would publicly announce the PROPER
\nresults by the end of next month.<\/p>\n
\"We want the public to know whether or not companies which
\nparticipated in the PROPER program are committed to not
\nendangering their environment,\" she told a press briefing
\nrecently.<\/p>\n
She expressed her optimism that PROPER's results could be
\nreleased next month as over 75 percent of the work, which began
\nin June, had been completed.<\/p>\n
The PROPER program is an evaluation carried out by the
\nMinistry to know whether or not companies pollute the
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
This year, some 69 firms participated in the PROPER program,
\nwhich can be categorized in various sectors such as pulp and
\npaper, textiles, fertilizer, cement, power plants and mining
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
Among the participants are publicly listed pulp and paper
\ncompany PT Indah Kiat, cement company PT Semen Cibinong, textile
\ncompany PT Indorama Synthetic and PT Texmaco, coal-fired power
\nplant Paiton Energy and state oil and gas company Pertamina.<\/p>\n
Under the PROPER program, the Minister for the Environment
\nexamines companies' efforts in controlling pollution of water,
\nair and solids, as well as toxic waste using their environment
\nassessment document, which goes by ISO14001 certificate
\nstandards.<\/p>\n
It will issue five ranking categories for companies by color
\nwhich will be gold for the highest, then green, blue, red and
\nblack for those who are the worst polluters.<\/p>\n
Hermien said that firms which took part in the PROPER program
\nand then are ranked high, would obtain several benefits such as
\nbecoming more competitive in the global market and an increased
\nshare price, not to mention keeping pollution at a minimum in
\ntheir community.<\/p>\n
Companies with good rankings will also receive incentives from
\nthe government in the form of loans with low interest rates, she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
But those which had poor ranks in the PROPER program would be
\nsuggested to carry out pollution management, otherwise their
\nlicenses could be revoked, she added.<\/p>",
