        "content": "<p>Govt threatens to close hospital treatment plants<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city environment bureau has threatened to<br>\nclose down the waste treatment plants of 11 hospitals in Jakarta<br>\nafter they ignored repeated warnings issued by the municipal<br>\nadministration.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings were aimed at improving the hospitals' waste<br>\nmanagement in order to support the city's program of clean<br>\nrivers, locally known as Program Kali Bersih (Prokasih).<\/p>\n<p>The chief of the bureau, Aboe Juwono, said yesterday the 11<br>\nhospitals are, Fatmawati General Hospital, Jakarta Islamic<br>\nHospital, Naval Hospital DR. Mintohardjo, Budi Kemuliaan<br>\nHospital, Jakarta Hospital, Sumber Waras Hospital, Pelni<br>\nHospital, St. Carolus Hospital, Budi Asih Hospital, Halim Perdana<br>\nKusuma Hospital and Ongko Mulyo Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Aboe said since Prokasih's launch in 1992, the bureau has<br>\nissued three warnings to the management of 13 hospitals. The<br>\nfirst warning was issued in September 1992, the second in July<br>\n1993 and the third in July 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Aboe said there were two other hospitals whose waste dumps<br>\nwere threatened with closure. They are MMC and Mitra Keluarga.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bureau canceled its plan because management of<br>\nthe two hospitals took the warnings seriously. \"They immediately<br>\ninstalled proper waste treatment facilities in their hospitals,\"<br>\nAboe said.<\/p>\n<p>Warnings<\/p>\n<p>He said the bureau has also issued two warnings to 13 other<br>\nhospitals, in Aug., 1993 and on Oct. 4, 1994.<\/p>\n<p>The 13 hospitals are Podomoro Maternal Hospital, Abdi Waluyo,<br>\nBunda, Harapan Bunda, Police Hospital, Wanita Evasari, Budhi<br>\nJaya, Asih, Cilandak Marine, Pasar Minggu, the Indonesian<br>\nChristian University Hospital, JPK and Harapan Kartini, reported<br>\nAntara.<\/p>\n<p>Aboe said the 13 hospitals will receive another warning next<br>\nyear if the respective managements disregard the bureau's second<br>\nwarning.<\/p>\n<p>He said the main problem hampering hospitals in Jakarta<br>\ninstalling adequate waste treatment facilities is lack of money.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, city councilor Muhammad Rodja of United Development<br>\nParty said city administration must be more open in announcing<br>\nhospitals which do not have adequate waste treatment plants.<\/p>\n<p>He also said city administration should not hesitate in suing<br>\ncompanies if they are found guilty of damaging the city's<br>\nenvironment.
