Govt supports SEAG athletes village plan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The controversy over the 1997 Southeast Asian
\n(SEA) Games athletes village construction may be nearing an end
\nas the government agrees in principle with the underwriting
\nconsortium's plans to build the village.<\/p>\n
Secretary-General of the Games Organizing Committee Rudolf
\nWarouw said yesterday that Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono
\nsent a letter approving the construction of the 1,000-room
\nvillage on a four-hectare former shooting range in Senayan.<\/p>\n
\"In principle the Minister's letter approves the construction
\nof the village,\" said Warouw, who is also secretary of the
\nNational Sports Council.<\/p>\n
He said that the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare
\nand chairman of the patron board, Azwar Anas, also sent a letter
\nto the Jakarta Governor urging the city administration to help
\nsolve \"all the technical problems\" affecting the village.<\/p>\n
Last week, the consortium complained that it had yet to
\nreceive approval from the administration although it said it sent
\nthe construction proposal in July.<\/p>\n
\"The consortium, the administration and the Gelora Senayan
\nmanagement board will take combined responsibility for completing
\nthe construction,\" Warouw said.<\/p>\n
The US$70 million village is expected to be completed two
\nweeks before the 19th SEA Games is opened by the President on
\nOct. 11 next year.<\/p>\n
Separately, Enggartiasto Lukito, a consortium member,
\nreiterated that the consortium \"is coordinating over technical
\nproblems with the administration and the Senayan management
\nboard.\"<\/p>\n
\"So far, we have received support from the government and the
\nadministration for the village construction,\" he said, as quoted
\nby Antara.<\/p>\n
\"But we still have no idea about the building design,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
He expressed optimism that the construction will be completed
\nin time. The village is expected to accommodate about 4,300
\nathletes from 10 participating countries.<\/p>\n
The consortium plans to use the village as an office complex,
\napartments, sports complex and athletes hotel after the Games.
\nThe whole complex will be managed by PT Djakarta Country Club.
