        "content": "<p>Govt supports SEAG athletes village plan<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The controversy over the 1997 Southeast Asian<br>\n(SEA) Games athletes village construction may be nearing an end<br>\nas the government agrees in principle with the underwriting<br>\nconsortium's plans to build the village.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-General of the Games Organizing Committee Rudolf<br>\nWarouw said yesterday that Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono<br>\nsent a letter approving the construction of the 1,000-room<br>\nvillage on a four-hectare former shooting range in Senayan.<\/p>\n<p>\"In principle the Minister's letter approves the construction<br>\nof the village,\" said Warouw, who is also secretary of the<br>\nNational Sports Council.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare<br>\nand chairman of the patron board, Azwar Anas, also sent a letter<br>\nto the Jakarta Governor urging the city administration to help<br>\nsolve \"all the technical problems\" affecting the village.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the consortium complained that it had yet to<br>\nreceive approval from the administration although it said it sent<br>\nthe construction proposal in July.<\/p>\n<p>\"The consortium, the administration and the Gelora Senayan<br>\nmanagement board will take combined responsibility for completing<br>\nthe construction,\" Warouw said.<\/p>\n<p>The US$70 million village is expected to be completed two<br>\nweeks before the 19th SEA Games is opened by the President on<br>\nOct. 11 next year.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Enggartiasto Lukito, a consortium member,<br>\nreiterated that the consortium \"is coordinating over technical<br>\nproblems with the administration and the Senayan management<br>\nboard.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"So far, we have received support from the government and the<br>\nadministration for the village construction,\" he said, as quoted<br>\nby Antara.<\/p>\n<p>\"But we still have no idea about the building design,\" he<br>\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed optimism that the construction will be completed<br>\nin time. The village is expected to accommodate about 4,300<br>\nathletes from 10 participating countries.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium plans to use the village as an office complex,<br>\napartments, sports complex and athletes hotel after the Games.<br>\nThe whole complex will be managed by PT Djakarta Country Club.<br>\n(yan)<\/p>",
