Govt sets up tsunami early warning system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Following the Dec. 26 tsunami in Aceh and North
\nSumatra, the government is setting up a tsunami early warning
\nsystem it claims will be able to predict incoming killer waves
\nonly five minutes after an initial earthquake.<\/p>\n
The system would be supported by 10 regional centers and would
\nbe integrated by a national center that would further disseminate
\na real-time warning to areas across the Indian and Pacific Ocean,
\nsaid Wendy Aritonang, of the science application division of the
\nOffice of the State Minister for Research and Technology.<\/p>\n
The Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG) will cooperate
\nwith other institutions equipped with better seismographic and
\nmaritime equipment, such as the Coordinating Body for Survey and
\nNational Charting Development Board (Bakorsurtanal), port
\noperator PT Pelindo, the National Institute of Sciences (LIPI)
\nand the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology
\n(BPPT).<\/p>\n
The establishment of the system, which would include
\nobservation of earthquakes, sea level and tsunami simulation,
