Govt response to disasters<\/p>\n

The government provides equal treatment to disaster-stricken
\nregions in Indonesia. In Aceh, the central government has
\ndirectly handled relief in the tsunami-devastated region because
\nall administrative levels in Aceh were paralyzed.<\/p>\n
In the recent earthquake in Nias, relief efforts are being
\nhandled by the Nias regency administration, and the North Sumatra
\nprovincial governor is in charge of controlling the situation.<\/p>\n
Three measures are involved in response to the Nias tremor:
\nevacuating quake victims, supplying food and providing medical
\ntreatment. Evacuation has been conducted despite initial
\ndifficulties due to limited equipment. Food for refugees is
\navailable but its distribution is not smooth.<\/p>\n
The government has sent five more boats to transport food,
\nwith the assistance of two helicopters from Australia. For
\nmedical treatment, medicine has been distributed and doctors
\nassigned, with field hospitals ready to serve patients. Tents
\nalso have been provided for those rendered homeless and the
\ngovernment will supply materials for rebuilding homes.<\/p>\n
The process of evacuation in the urban areas of Nias will
\nspeed up with the arrival 15 units of heavy equipment. After the
\ncompletion of the evacuation, Nias will be rebuilt in the same
\nway as Aceh.<\/p>\n
