        "content": "<p>Govt resolves problems faced by Japanese firms<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The government has made substantial progress in resolving<br>\nproblems faced by Japanese companies operating in this country,<br>\naccording to a press statement issued on Thursday by the Office<br>\nof the Coordinating Minister for the Economy.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was made following a regular consultation<br>\nmeeting on Wednesday between economics ministers and the Jakarta<br>\nJapan Club, whose members include some 380 Japanese companies.<br>\nThe meeting was chaired by Coordinating Minister for the Economy<br>\nDorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti.<\/p>\n<p>\"Out of 79 topics relating to problems and obstacles faced by<br>\nJapanese investors in Indonesia, 42 problems have been resolved,<br>\n30 are still in the process of further discussion, and seven are<br>\ndifficult to resolve as they are linked to existing laws,\" the<br>\npress statement said.<\/p>\n<p>From the 42 problems which have been resolved, 14 were<br>\nconsidered very urgent, it said. This includes problems and<br>\nobstacles in the area of customs procedure, taxation, and labor<br>\naffairs.<\/p>\n<p>Japan is one of Indonesia's main foreign investors. Investment<br>\nactivities in the country have been dwindling during the past<br>\ncouple of years due to various problems. The government is now<br>\nunder pressure to push investment, which is seen as a key factor<br>\nif the country wants to enjoy higher economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia's economics ministers and other related senior<br>\ngovernment officials have been meeting regularly with the Jakarta<br>\nJapan Club to seek ways to help improve investment climate in<br>\nthis country. The regular meeting was a result of the visit by<br>\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri to Tokyo in 2001. So far the two<br>\nsides have met seven times.<\/p>\n<p>The consultation forum is divided into five sub-commissions,<br>\nincluding on excise and customs, taxation, labor, investment<br>\npromotion and development of supporting industries, and energy.<\/p>\n<p>The press statement did not disclose the areas that have not<br>\nbeen resolved.<\/p>\n<p>But the problems that have already been resolved, among others<br>\nare: accelerating customs clearance procedure; curbing illegal<br>\nfees in customs clearance; improving information systems;<br>\nstreamlining customs documents; setting up a one-stop center;<br>\nstreamlining import procedure of used machinery; issues on value<br>\nadded tax; and definitions of valid labor strikes.<\/p>",
