Govt names two new officials<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Despite its pledge to improve efficiency, the
\ngovernment has expanded its bureaucratic network by naming two
\nnew officials who fall directly under the President.<\/p>\n
Asep Saefuddin has been appointed the initial chief of the
\nNational Information Institute, an agency that replaces the now
\ndissolved ministry of information.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security
\nAffairs Agum Gumelar installed Asep on Friday.<\/p>\n
In its statement issued following the swearing-in ceremony,
\nthe institute contended that it would not play the same role as
\nthe now defunct ministry of information, which was known as the
\ngovernment's mouthpiece.<\/p>\n
\"The agency will focus on developing a system of information
\ninside the government and providing the government with opinion
\nbased on people's feedback. The agency will not be used to
\ninfluence public opinion,\" the statement said.<\/p>\n
Asep was the ministry of information's inspector general in
\n1999, when President Abdurrahman Wahid dissolved the ministry.<\/p>\n
The President then established the National Information and
\nCommunication Board (BKNN) to take over some of the ministry's
\nrole, but the board was also dissolved late last year.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman had also issued a decree that appointed former
\nstate minister of investment Rozy Munir as the maiden chief of
\nthe National Population Board.<\/p>\n
First secretary of the board Prapto Hadi told the media that
\nRozy would be installed by Minister of Home Affairs and Regional
\nAutonomy Surjadi Soedirdja on Monday.<\/p>\n
Presidential Decree No. 42\/2001 also stipulates that the board
\nis responsible for the drafting of broad programs, formulating
\nand deciding policies, planning guidelines and information
\nsystems related to population administration.<\/p>\n
Prapto said that in the long run, the board would play a
\npivotal role, not only in improving people's quality of life, but
\nalso in preventing clashes between people at the grassroots.
