Govt must protect all communities<\/p>\n
This is to provide feedback on the article Susilo denies anti-
\nChinese economic policy which was published on Aug. 20.<\/p>\n
In this article we are somehow seeing just one side of the
\nstory, whereas I would not like to take Jusuf Kalla's comment
\ninto account. The oppression against Chinese-Indonesians is here
\nregarded as a victim, instead of as a result of something.<\/p>\n
It is not fair of course for Chinese-Indonesians if the
\ngovernment is enacting policies, which favor indigenous citizens.
\nHowever, we need to explore deeply all the reasons why the
\nindigenous citizens in Indonesia are cautious about ethnicity-
\nrelated issues.<\/p>\n
We need to look at the other side of the story by scrutinizing
\nwhat is happening currently with all the commerce\/businesses
\nhere, where (the Chinese-Indonesian owners) are either
\nunconsciously or intentionally forcing indigenous Indonesians to
\nleave the company, thus leaving all the Chinese-Indonesians to
\nstay and work for the company. In many cases, people are thrown
\nout of an interview in a matter of minutes after the employer
\nrealizes that the candidates are not Chinese-Indonesian. We need
\nto look at these real incidents closely and meticulously. It is
\nhappening! These incidents were not mapped out and recorded.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the government should try to strike a balance by
\nstipulating policies that protect both Chinese-Indonesians and
\nindigenous people. For instance, when running a business or
\nwhatever organization involving the welfare of the community, it
\nmust at least have an organizational structure with a 50:50 ratio
\nof indigenous and Chinese-Indonesians and\/or others.<\/p>\n
The government also needs to establish serious policies on
\nwhat action should be taken when it is discovered that a certain
\ncompany abuses human rights and violates equal opportunities at
\nwork. This should be a two-way street, where perhaps a
\ncomplaint\/input box should be available at the Ministry of
\nManpower and Transmigration where complaints are properly
\nprioritized based on validity.<\/p>\n
The indigenous Indonesians are still traumatized from
\ncenturies of polarization and domination by a certain group of
\npeople and that includes, in some cases, Chinese-Indonesians.
\nEvery result has a cause. Imbalanced policies can keep us in a
\nstagnant position if we focus on ethnicity-related feelings. The
\ngovernment should not just be trying to guarantee full protection
\nfor a certain group of people, but they must be able to enact
\npolicies that offer protection for some ethnic groups and
\nencourage other ethnic groups to grow equally.<\/p>\n
