Govt, House to hold
\ntalks on Ambalat<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The House of Representatives will meet with the
\ngovernment on Friday night to discuss the dispute with Malaysia
\nover the offshore Ambalat oil block in the Sulawesi Sea.<\/p>\n
House Speaker Agung Laksono said on Tuesday the meeting would
\ntake place at the State Palace to discuss the government's
\nstrategy for maintaining possession of Ambalat.<\/p>\n
A number of legislators have criticized the government for
\nfailing to consult the House on its decision to deploy
\nreinforcement troops to the disputed area.<\/p>\n
According to Law No. 34\/2004 on the Indonesian Military, the
\ngovernment is required to inform the House within 48 hours after

VP opens Asian
\nPhysics Olympiad<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: A total of 120 senior high school students
\nfrom 19 countries participated in the sixth Asian Physics
\nOlympiad, which was opened here on Tuesday by Vice President
\nJusuf Kalla (not by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as
\nreported earlier).<\/p>\n
The week-long event ending on May 2 is being held at the
\ncampus of the Riau Politeknik University.<\/p>\n
The organizing committee said that certain nations had not
\nsent teams due to concerns over security and natural disasters.<\/p>\n
The vice president said in his opening speech that the physics
\nolympiad should serve as an encouragement for Indonesian students
\nto learn more about science, particularly physics, so that
\nIndonesia could catch up with other countries in this particular
\nfield.<\/p>\n
He also criticized teachers and school masters who are more
\ninterested in pushing students to achieve passing grades rather

Police to join new
\nillegal logging team<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The National Police said on Tuesday they will submit
\nfour names to the Military Police chief as members of a joint
\nteam that will handle illegal logging cases.<\/p>\n
The government plans to set up the team to deal with legal
\nprocedures for illegal logging trials since most suspects came
\nfrom different backgrounds, including police and military
\npersonnel and civil servants, and different procedures are
\nrequired in handling their cases.<\/p>\n
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Aryanto Boedihardjo said
\nthe four proposed officers were Sr. Comr. Alpiner Sinaga, Adj.
\nSr. Comr. Yerrit Maryono, Comr. Yafit Parembang and Adj. Comr.
\nMugiyono -- all investigators of the special crimes division at
\nthe National Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n
The four officers will assist other team members from the
\nAttorney General's Office and the Indonesian Military. Military
\nPolice deputy chief Brig. Gen. Hendardji will reportedly lead the
