Govt fires Aperjapti over extortion<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The government has revoked the license for state
\ncompany PT Damri and a subsidiary of the national flag carrier PT
\nGaruda Biru to transport migrant workers from Soekarno-Hatta
\nairport to their hometowns and granted the new contract to the
\npolice.<\/p>\n
Chief of the airport police station Comr. Sri Suari said the
\ntwo transportation companies had been proven guilty of extorting
\nreturning migrant workers.<\/p>\n
\"This practice has been committed frequently and quietly,\"
\nSuari told visiting Minister of Manpower and Transportation Jacob
\nNuwa Wea, Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanegara and
\nNational Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saleh Saaf.<\/p>\n
The tranportation companies are part of the Association of
\nMigrant Workers Transportation Services (Aperjapti).<\/p>\n
Jacob, who was inspecting the transportation service for
\nmigrant workers at the airport, said Aperjati had failed to
\nrectify the situation in which he had given them 13 months to
\nimprove.<\/p>\n
In his response, Aperjapti chairman Anthon Sihombing said his
\norganization's image should not be tarnished, because other
