        "content": "<p>Govt develops database on patent information<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government, with the assistance of American<br>\ncomputer software giant Microsoft, is currently developing a<br>\ndatabase on products patented in the country which is expected to<br>\nimprove the processing as well as protection of patent rights.<\/p>\n<p>Sunaryati Haryono, the chief of the Agency for National Legal<br>\nDevelopment, which is under the Ministry of Justice, told<br>\nreporters yesterday that the database should be completed before<br>\nnext April, the start of the 1996\/1997 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, anyone wishing to obtain information on patented<br>\ninventions must go to the agency's headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>With the database system, the information will be available at<br>\nall provincial offices of the Ministry of Justice and even a few<br>\nother government agencies, Sunaryati said.<\/p>\n<p>One chief advantage is that it would prevent two products<br>\nregistering for the same patent rights, she added.<\/p>\n<p>The database system uses the Microsoft SQL Single Server for<br>\nimage tracking and Microsoft Visual Basic for the system<br>\napplication, according to an executive of PT Infotek Mitrasejati,<br>\nthe local representative of the Microsoft Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Infotek beat six other companies who bid for the project.<\/p>\n<p>Shuk Kwan Chan, Microsoft's Technical Marketing Manager for<br>\nthe Asia Pacific Region, guaranteed that the system would not be<br>\noutdated even though technology constantly changes.<\/p>\n<p>\"Future database systems by Microsoft will always be developed<br>\nwith backward compatibility. You have nothing to worry about<br>\nbecause your investment is protected with the our product<br>\ncompatibility,\" he told the same media briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Ana Sukanto, head of the Report and Programming Department of<br>\nthe Directorate General of Copy Rights, Patent and Trademarks,<br>\nsaid there are currently 70 patented inventions already recorded<br>\nin the database, while some 1,000 inventions are still in the<br>\nprocess of obtaining patent rights.
