Govt denies barring journalist<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government denied press reports yesterday
\nthat it has barred a senior journalist of the Sydney Morning
\nHerald from entering Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Ambassador to Australia Sabam Siagian told The
\nJakarta Post that David Jenkins had obtained a visa from the
\nIndonesian consulate in Sydney especially to cover last month's
\nAsia-Africa Conference anniversary in Bandung.<\/p>\n
\"He obtained permission to attend the gathering but he did not
\ngo. Instead, he intends to visit Indonesia now to cover the visit
\nof Governor General Bill Hayden,\" Siagian said.<\/p>\n
UPI reported yesterday that Jenkins, the Herald's Asia editor,
\nwas banned from entering Indonesia despite having been issued a
\nfive-week visa.<\/p>\n
The news agency quoted a spokesman for the Herald as saying
\nthat no reason was given for the ban, which came after Jenkins'
\nvisa was issued.<\/p>\n
Jenkins last came to Indonesia in November last year to report
\non the meeting of leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic
\nCooperation forum.<\/p>\n
Jenkins was banned from Indonesia in 1984 after the
\npublication of his book on Soeharto and the military. In 1986 he
\nwrote an article in the Herald on the business activities of
\nPresident Soeharto's family.<\/p>\n
He was a former Jakarta correspondent for the Herald and the
