Govt delays West Java gubernatorial election<\/p>\n

Taking a lesson from other provinces, Home Minister Hari Sabarno
\nordered the West Java legislative council to delay the
\ngubernatorial election until all candidates met all
\nadministrative requirements.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the gubernatorial election committee Suyaman
\nconfirmed on Friday that he had asked the home minister to call
\non the legislative council to delay the gubernatorial election
\nscheduled for May 19, since two candidates had yet to meet all
\nadministrative and legal requirements.<\/p>\n
Danny Setiawan, a gubernatorial candidate nominated by Golkar
\nand the United Development Party (PPP) factions, was required to
\nget an approval from the government prosecutor's office in
\nBandung which was still investigating him for alleged involvement
\nin a Rp 4.1 billion corruption case.<\/p>\n
Rudy Harsya Tanaya, a deputy gubernatorial candidate nominated
\nby the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
\nand National Awakening Party (PKB) factions to accompany
\ngubernatorial candidate Tayo Tarmadi, could not provide a senior
\nhigh school diploma, which he said he had misplaced.<\/p>\n
The local police and the Regina Pacis Senior High School in
\nBogor confirmed his official explanation that his certificate had
\nbeen lost.<\/p>\n
The 1999 regional autonomy law requires all candidates to be
\nat least high school graduates.<\/p>\n
The minister also made a similar decision to delay the
\ngubernatorial election in North Sumatra because deputy
\ngubernatorial candidate Rudolf Pardede nominated by PDI
\nPerjuangan faction had no high school diploma.<\/p>\n
The central government has taken much of the criticism for
\nseveral dubious gubernatorial and regency elections in recent
\nyears.<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri has declined to accept Alzier
\nDianis Thabranie who was elected as governor by the Lampung
\nprovincial legislature last November as the senior provincial
\nofficial was involved in several corruption cases. A regency in
\nRiau was dismissed by the regency legislature for using a fake
\nhigh school diploma when he ran for office. The new governors of
\nSouth and Southeast Sulawesi have face strong protests for a
\nspate of alleged wrongdoings before they were elected.<\/p>\n
The provincial legislative council held a meeting to respond
\nto the home minister's letter but no decision was made on whether
\nto accept the minister's instruction or not.<\/p>\n
Irfan Anshori, chairman of the coalition faction at the
\nlegislature, was taken aback by the letter which he claimed was
\nbelittling toward the provincial legislative council and its
\nrulings.<\/p>\n
"It will be a problem if the legislative council cannot elect
\na new government by June 6 at which time (current) Governor
\nNuriana would legally have to vacate his office."<\/p>",
