Govt declares war on drugs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Deputy Governor for Social Welfare R.S. Museno
\nannounced yesterday that the city administration would take firm
\naction against anyone found to have trafficked in banned drugs.<\/p>\n
Museno said it was impossible for the city administration to
\ntackle the problem working on its own.<\/p>\n
\"We are cooperating with other related institutions as the
\ncity only has authority to handle the public order aspect of the
\nmatter while investigating and curbing the circulation of drugs
\nare police jobs. Therefore it is important to coordinate with
\nother institutions, such as the police,\" Museno said.<\/p>\n
Museno said that coordination was needed so there would be no
\nmistakes in the launching of the operation.<\/p>\n
Drug trafficking among young people has reportedly reached a
\ndangerous level, with drug-dealing occurring in public places,
\nsuch as discotheques.<\/p>\n
It is believed the most popular drug among young people at
\npresent is ecstasy, an amphetamine-related drug imported from the
\nU.S. and Europe. Ecstasy sells for between Rp 80,000 and Rp
\n200,000 per pill, according to reports.<\/p>\n
Asked about progress in the investigation of a discotheque in
\nSouth Jakarta which has allegedly been violating the public order
\nregulation, Museno said that the city public order office was
\nstill investigating the claims.<\/p>\n
He rejected suggestions that the city administration was
\n\"reluctant\" to take immediate and firm action against the
\ndiscotheque because it had the backing of certain \"powerful\"
\npeople.<\/p>\n
\"No, that is not true. We do not tolerate such things, even
\nassuming the accusation that the place has powerful backers to be
\ntrue,\" Museno said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Minister of Health Sujudi has called for illegal
\ndrugs to be eliminated once and for all.<\/p>\n
He said illegal drugs caused the younger generation to lead a
\n\"negative\" way of life and made them \"unappreciative of the
\nstruggle of the founding fathers who built the country.\"<\/p>\n
\"They have many better things to do and they should use their
\ntime more fruitfully for the benefit of others,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said there was presently no legal company producing
\npsychotropic drugs. \"If there are any (psychotropic drugs) on the
\nmarket, they must have been smuggled into the country\".<\/p>\n
Sujudi said the government was currently formulating a law to
\nregulate the production, distribution and quality of liquor.<\/p>\n
He said the draft was being compiled jointly by the ministry
\nof industry, which was handling the production aspects; the
\nministry of trade, which was considering distribution issues; and
\nthe ministry of health, which was giving its attention to the
\nquestion of quality.<\/p>\n
Sujudi said the new law would prevent liquor from being
\nproduced through methods other than fermentation. (pwn\/yns)<\/p>",
