        "content": "<p>Govt begin efforts to tackle corruption<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Coordinating Minister for Development<br>\nSupervision and State Administrative Reforms revealed yesterday<br>\nthat he had ordered all ministers, governors, heads of state<br>\nowned companies and related officials to speed up efforts to<br>\nreduce the incidence of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The minister asked all officials to terminate projects or<br>\ncontracts with private companies if they found any irregularities<br>\nin the deals.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said immediate family, distant relatives or<br>\nfriends of government officials should not get any special<br>\nbusiness privileges.<\/p>\n<p>However, Hartarto warned officials not to violate the existing<br>\nlaw, including international law, with regards to contracts with<br>\nthird parties.<\/p>\n<p>\"Any ongoing projects which are corrupt in their nature or<br>\nwhich were awarded on a collusive or nepotistic basis are<br>\nexpected to be renegotiated,\" Hartarto said after meeting with<br>\nPresident B.J. Habibie along with Minister\/State Secretary Akbar<br>\nTandjung and head of the government audit agency (BPKP)<br>\nSoedarjono.<\/p>\n<p>Habibie vowed to stamp out chronic corruption shortly after<br>\nreplacing Soeharto on May 21.<\/p>\n<p>However, he pointed out the importance of distinguishing<br>\nclearly between the three unhealthy practices to ensure that all<br>\ncitizens were equal before the law.<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto distributed a circular letter which meticulously<br>\ndefined each of corruption, collusion and nepotism in a bid to<br>\nprevent confusion among government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto said that corruption, collusion and nepotism were<br>\n\"projects or business which had been granted certain privileges\".<\/p>\n<p>Opposition groups and students said the government should not<br>\nwaste time defining each of the practices and should get on with<br>\nbringing them to an end.<\/p>\n<p>The minister answered these criticisms by saying: \"It is very<br>\nimportant to alleviate (corruption) with a clear understanding to<br>\navoid arbitrary actions.\"<\/p>\n<p>The minister also issued a strong warning to government<br>\nofficials tempted to grant bank loans, tax or customs<br>\nprivileges, exclusive rights or offer unnecessary mediation<br>\nservices.
