Govt assures seats for all elementary school graduates<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city's junior high schools will be able to
\naccommodate all elementary school graduates, a city official of
\nthe Ministry of Education and Culture has claimed.<\/p>\n
Alwi Nurdin, the administration coordinator of the city office
\nof the ministry, said yesterday that if all the elementary school
\npupils pass their final examinations thee would be 149,000
\nchildren looking for places in junior high schools.<\/p>\n
\"Meanwhile there are 150,000 seats in junior schools for the
\nnext academic year,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The graduates also include those from the Moslem madrasah
\nibtidaiyah (elementary) schools.<\/p>\n
Judging from this situation, \"The government's compulsory
\nnine-year education program will not be a problem,\" Alwi said
\nduring his visit to a number of schools where students were
\ntaking their final exams in physics and social sciences.<\/p>\n
Outside<\/p>\n
Antara quoted Alwi as saying that 10 percent of the junior
\nschool seats will be allocated to graduates from outside the
\ncity.<\/p>\n
However these graduates are only entitled to apply to schools
\nwhich are not on the city's list of best schools.<\/p>\n
This year state junior schools will no longer need to hold
\ntheir own tests for applicants, he said.<\/p>\n
School staff only need to determine applicants by their final
\nexamination scores.<\/p>\n
Alwi said he was sure this year will not see cases of parents
\nbeing told to \"buy\" good scores to ensure junior schools accept
\ntheir children, as was reported last year in West Java.<\/p>\n
Supervision<\/p>\n
\"We will step up supervision\" to prevent such practices, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
They would be impossible if examination checking is
\ncomputerized, instead of by the current manual process, Alwi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Gito Purnomo, the city's head of the agency in charge of
\nelementary education, said this was not yet possible.<\/p>\n
\"It is not a problem of funding. But we have yet to hold a
\ntrial for computerization of examination checking,\" Gito said.<\/p>\n
The agency is still studying the benefits and disadvantages of
\ncomputerized exam checking, he said.<\/p>\n
The three-day state exams for the elementary level run until
