Govt allocates $702,000 for e-learning<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The government has allocated Rp 6.25 billion (about
\nUS$702,000) for the installation of e-learning technology
\nequipment for 50 cities in eight provinces.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Education's director for vocational education
\nGatot Haripriowirjanto said on Friday that last year the ministry
\nspent Rp 1.125 billion for the installation of e-learning
\nequipment in nine cities in seven provinces.<\/p>\n
Arif Rachman, the chairman of the national committee of the
\nUnited Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
\n(UNESCO), however, said that what was important for the education
\nsector right now was to expand education access for poor citizens
\nlike street children, for example.<\/p>\n
He suggested the government first improve the quality of
\nteachers and basic educational facilities.<\/p>\n
"Technology is important but I think most teachers in
\nIndonesia are still busy thinking about what their families have
\nto eat every day," Arif said.<\/p>\n
E-learning technology allows students to study through
\nInternet programs fortified with graphic texts, animation and
\nsound effects.<\/p>\n
So far, the Directorate of Vocational Education has developed
\n40 learning subjects on automotive engineering, information
\ntechnology, electrical installation, machine tool technology, as
\nwell as metal and wood craftsmanship. --JP<\/p>",
