Govt agency seeks strict land use law<\/p>\n

The National Land Agency (BPN) is drafting a bill that will
\nregulate the purposes for which land may be used.<\/p>\n
BPN chairman Lutfi Nasoetion said that the planned bill was
\npart of a revision of Law No. 5\/1960 on land reform, which does
\nplace any controls over land.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a meeting with House of Representatives
\nCommission II on government, regional autonomy and land affairs
\non Tuesday, Lutfi said it was necessary to balance the use of
\nland for different purposes.<\/p>\n
According to the planned bill, land will be categorized into
\nland for agricultural and land for other purposes, as well as
\nland for individual or legal entity ownership.<\/p>\n
Plantations and fish ponds are classified as agricultural land
\nwhile housing, resorts, hotels or industrial areas are classified
\nas other purposes.<\/p>\n
The law will also limit ownership of land by individuals and
\nlegal entities, including government institutions, but details
\nhave not been made available.<\/p>\n
Lutfi said the revised version of the Land Reform Law would
\nnot ignore tribal land rights.<\/p>\n
He added that his office was also drafting a bill on land
\nrights and land acquisition for development activities.<\/p>",
