Governor wants non-luxury monorail<\/p>\n

Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso has threatened to appoint other
\ninvestors if PT Indonesian Transit Central (ITC), with which the
\ncity administration has signed a memorandum of understanding
\n(MOU), refuses to construct monorail lines in less lucrative
\nareas.<\/p>\n
\"I told ITC that they must not only focus on lucrative routes,
\nbut also those in less attractive areas,\" he said on Friday after
\nmeeting with ITC officials at City Hall.<\/p>\n
The administration signed the MOU with ITC and its Malaysian
\npartner M Trans Holding in Kuching, Malaysia, at the end of
\nAugust last year, witnessed by then Malaysian prime minister
\nMahathir Mohamad and President Megawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
The governor said the city administration had received at
\nleast two other offers from British and Singaporean investors,
\nwhich also expressed their readiness to construct monorail lines.<\/p>\n
City Hall spokesman Muhayat said that Sutiyoso demanded that
\nthe contract agreement, which would be signed by the
\nadministration and ITC, include ITC's readiness to construct
\nmonorail lines connecting Jakarta with Bekasi in the east and
\nTangerang in the west.<\/p>\n
\"The company may only develop monorail lines in downtown areas
\nfor its first project, but the planned contract agreement must
\ninclude the development of other lines,\" Muhayat told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso set the deadline at end of this month for ITC to
\nagree with the request. Otherwise, the administration would open
\nthe possibility of negotiating with other investors.<\/p>\n
\"We shall give priority to ITC and its Malaysian partner, but
\nif they cannot fulfill our requirements, we may appoint other
\ninvestors,\" he added.<\/p>\n
ITC changed its proposal from constructing a monorail line in
\nthe borders to two lines in the city between Kampung Melayu in
\nthe east and Roxy in the west.<\/p>\n
For the two proposed monorail lines with a total length of
\naround 27 kilometers, ITC and M Trans Holdings planned to invest
\na total of US$540 billion.<\/p>\n
The planned first line is a 14.8-kilometer ring, named the
\n\"green line\", serving the capital's golden triangle area of
\nKuningan, Sudirman and Senayan, with 16 stations.<\/p>\n
The stations will be at Senayan Sports complex, Plaza Senayan,
\nJakarta Convention Center, Taman Ria Senayan, the House of
\nRepresentatives\/People's Consultative Assembly building,
\nPejompongan, Karet, Sudirman, Setiabudi, Kuningan, Taman Rasuna,
\nCasablanca, Gran Melia, Satria Mandala Museum, Jakarta Police
\nHeadquarters and the Jakarta Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n
The second is the 12.2-kilometer \"blue line\" connecting
\nKampung Melayu and Roxy. This line will serve 13 stations:
\nKampung Melayu bus terminal, Tebet, Saharjo, Menteng Dalam,
\nCasablanca, Mal Ambassador, Dharmala Sakti, Menara Batavia,
\nKaret, Kebon Kacang, Tanah Abang, Cideng and Roxy.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said he needed a guarantee from ITC that it was ready
\nto develop lines in less lucrative areas because if it was only
\nready to develop in profitable areas, the city would have
\nproblems finding investors for the other lines.<\/p>",
