        "content": "<p>Governor tells public to avoid poultry with bird flu symptoms<\/p>\n<p>Damar Harsanto, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Governor Sutiyoso warned Jakarta residents to be wary of avian<br>\nflu and to avoid eating fowl that displayed avian flu symptoms<br>\neven though the Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency has<br>\nannounced that the avian flu strain found on several poultry<br>\nfarms in North Jakarta posed no dangers to humans.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In fact, birds that have the avian flu virus are safe to eat,<br>\nbut I would advise you to nevertheless be on your guard by not<br>\neating them,&quot; Sutiyoso told reporters at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Citing the results of the tests conducted by the Jakarta<br>\nAnimal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency, Sutiyoso said that the<br>\nsuspected outbreak of avian flu, which killed 450 quail on a farm<br>\nin Semper, North Jakarta, could only be transmitted to animals<br>\nand that it would be unlikely that it would jump to human.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The test results confirm that this avian flu strain is<br>\ndifferent from the strain behind the outbreak in Vietnam, which<br>\nis very harmful to human life,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the relevant city agencies had taken<br>\nprecautionary measures by assigning more officers to monitor<br>\npoultry farms and poultry markets across the capital.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Those officers will also take blood samples from people who<br>\nare directly exposed to birds that have contracted the virus,<br>\nlike poultry breeders and bird traders,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>So far, there had been no reports of people contracting avian<br>\nflu here.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sutiyoso, the administration&apos;s officers had also<br>\ndestroyed birds found to have avian flu so as to prevent the<br>\noutbreak from spreading.<\/p>\n<p>The administration has intensified the monitoring of livestock<br>\nentering the city&apos;s markets at around 100 check points across the<br>\ncapital.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Our officers will continue to carry out physical checks on<br>\nlivestock entering the city&apos;s markets even if they have been<br>\ndeclared healthy by the relevant agency in the place of origin,&quot;<br>\nsaid an official at the Pulogadung check point.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of avian flu in birds include brownish crests,<br>\nreddish skin and rashes on the feet and head.<\/p>",
