Governor solicits public criticism<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso opened the door yesterday for
\nall Jakartans to provide criticism and input to assist city
\nofficials in stamping out malfeasance.<\/p>\n
\"I open wide the opportunity for the people. Don't be afraid
\nto inform us whenever there are malfeasance practices by our
\nofficials.\"<\/p>\n
Information and criticism could be sent by mail to the
\nadministration, he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso added that he would welcome those who wished to
\nexpress their concerns directly to him.<\/p>\n
\"The public must dare to identify the officials who are
\nallegedly involved in the malfeasance. They must also dare to
\nreject (corrupt officials).\"<\/p>\n
He cited drivers who were forced to pay illegal levies to
\nunscrupulous officials on the street. He said they should be able
\nto get the latter's names and identify the perpetrators at the
\nadministration office when they submitted their complaints.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said people should not only be able to criticize but
\nalso provide detailed information so \"hopefully we can catch
\n(unethical officials) in the act\".<\/p>\n
He said administration officials at all levels had been
\ninstructed to stop all malfeasance practices, including
\ncorruption, collusion, collection of illegal levies and other
\nunsavory actions which burdened the public.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Sutiyoso announced the establishment of the Reform
\nControl and Supervision Commission, with the aim of helping to
\neradicate the corruption, collusion, cronyism and nepotism
\npracticed by officials at all levels.<\/p>\n
The commission consists of deputy governor for administration
\naffairs Abdul Kahfi as its chief and four high-ranking officials
\nas assistants.<\/p>\n
It focuses on four major issues of the city's public service,
\nbudget, expenditure and law and organization.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso admitted yesterday the commission was bound to face
\nobstacles in achieving its goals.<\/p>\n
\"I admit that the commission's ability to supervise the reform
\nwithin the administration is very restricted. That's why we
\nreally need the people's support here,\" he said. (cst)<\/p>",
