Governor seeks help from city's advisory board<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja is calling for
\nassistance by development experts as the city soars ever upwards
\ntoward the era of \"skyscrapers and flyovers.\"<\/p>\n
\"The future of Jakarta will be colored with the ever
\ncontinuing emergence of skyscrapers, flyovers, and the scarcity
\nof green areas,\" the governor said yesterday at the inauguration
\nceremony of new members of the BPTB, an advisory board in charge
\nof giving advice to the municipality on development affairs.<\/p>\n
He asked the board to render full assistance to the city
\nadministration in developing the city so that \"the existence of
\nthe green zone is proportionate to the developed zone, and
\nunderground water is well preserved.\"<\/p>\n
Around 50 new members of the BPTB (Building Technical Advisory
\nBody) were installed yesterday for the 1994-1997 period.<\/p>\n
Prawoto, an assistant to the provincial secretary in charge of
\ndevelopment and economic affairs, said the body comprises noted
\nexperts from several prominent universities and think-tanks.<\/p>\n
The body, ex officio presided over by the chief of the
\nMunicipal Development Surveillance Office, consists of three
\nsections, including the Architectural Advisory Team, Building
\nConstruction Advisory Team and Building Installation Advisory
\nTeam.<\/p>\n
New chief<\/p>\n
Muchamad Danisworo from the ITB (Bandung Institute of
\nTechnology) was installed as new chief of the Architectural
\nAdvisory Team, Harianto Sunidja from the UI (University of
\nIndonesia) as new chief of the Building Construction Advisory
\nTeam, and Sudibyono as new chief of the Building Installation
\nAdvisory Team.<\/p>\n
Each team is to hold weekly discussions on cases related to
\ntheir expertise and regularly advise the governor.<\/p>\n
Prawoto said the body was formed in 1974 because the
\nmunicipality at the time lacked technical experts on development
\naffairs.<\/p>\n
\"Besides, the municipality wants to always remain objective in
\njudging and deciding on development cases which draw complaints
\nfrom the public,\" said Prawoto, who also serves as one of the
\nbody's supervisors.<\/p>\n
According to him, from 1990 to 1993, the Architectural
\nAdvisory Body managed to handle and solve 2,620 cases.<\/p>\n
The Building Construction Advisory Team managed to handle 152
\nprojects of more than eight-story buildings.<\/p>\n
The Building Installation Advisory Team managed to handle 94
\nprojects of above eight story buildings.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi noted that the body faces greater challenges
\nin the years ahead, following the issuance of a gubernatorial
\ndecree of 1994 on building intensity.<\/p>\n
The decree opens the possibility of constructing high-rise
\nbuildings over 32 stories high.<\/p>\n
MH Ritonga, the City Council speaker, told the Jakarta Post
\nthat the city council fully supported the formation of the
\nadvisory body.<\/p>\n
\"Such a body is extremely necessary for Jakarta. Soon after
\nthe ceremony, I told my fellow city councilors that we will hold
\nmany hearings with the body of experts in the future,\" said
