Governor says no to party posts<\/p>\n

The city administration will prohibit the establishment of
\npolitical party posts across the city, to prevent possible
\nclashes among supporters of different parties.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso said on Tuesday that his administration
\nwould instead finance the establishment of joint posts for
\nparties in each subdistrict. The post will be a center for
\nrepresentatives of each political party.<\/p>\n
He did not specify the budget allocated for the posts.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso objected to the establishment of posts by individual
\nparties, fearing that it would spark clashes among the supporters
\nas happened in Buleleng, Bali, between the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) and the Golkar Party. Two
\npeople were killed in Sunday's incident.<\/p>\n
He also argued that such posts, bedecked with various colors
\nand flags, would spoil the beauty of the city.<\/p>\n
\"How many posts would have to be set up in the capital if all
\nparties create their own?\"<\/p>\n
In the last election in 1999, thousands of posts were set up
\nacross the city.<\/p>\n
The administration is waiting for the General Elections
\nCommission's (KPU) decision on the number of parties to join next
\nyear's general elections.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said that he would brief parties to discuss various
\nissues including the campaign and the parties' flags. The
\nadministration has decided not to allow any political parties to
\nplace flags along major thoroughfares of Jl. Jend. Sudirman and
\nJl. M.H. Thamrin.<\/p>\n
To avoid clashes among supporters, the governor urged big
\npolitical parties including PDI Perjuangan, Golkar, National
\nMandate Party (PAN), National Awakening Party (PKB) and United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP) not to have a similar campaign schedule.<\/p>\n
\"We hope next year's general elections will be peaceful just
\nlike the 1999 election,\" he said.<\/p>",
