Governor regrets trafficker release<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso expressed disappointment on
\nThursday over the release of an alleged drug trafficker recently
\narrested by residents of Kampung Bali in Tanah Abang, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Why did it happen? We should not tolerate drug trafficking
\nany longer,\" Sutiyoso told reporters at City Hall.<\/p>\n
He expressed regret over the police's freeing of the suspect,
\nidentified as Rizky, saying police have not been serious in
\nfighting the drug trade.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor for Social Affairs Djailani said separately
\nthe police should give an explanation for the release of the
\nsuspect.<\/p>\n
\"There should be an explanation for the release,\" he said.<\/p>\n
But Djailani said he did not expect the release of the suspect
\nwould weaken the people's enthusiasm in fighting against drugs.<\/p>\n
\"We must continue the war against drugs,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Angry residents of Kampung Bali threatened to burn a local
\npolice station on Tuesday after the police released Rizky, who
\nthey caught and handed over to the police last Saturday.<\/p>\n
Tanah Abang Police, which has jurisdiction over Kampung Bali,
\nfreed Rizky on Monday evening, saying police had found no
\nevidence to prosecute Rizky.<\/p>\n
Rizky was arrested in the Kampung Bali neighborhood by
\nresidents last Saturday, upon information from a drug user who
\nsaid she had bought drugs from Rizky.<\/p>\n
Two of the drug users caught during a raid reportedly
\nconfessed that they bought shabu-shabu, locally made crystal
\nmethamphetamine, from Rizky.<\/p>\n
One of the users who made the confession, Nugroho Bayu, is a
\nstudent of the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso earlier declared war against drug trafficking in the
\ncity. He expressed concern over reports that drug dealers had
\nextended their trade to selling to students of elementary
\nschools.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, city police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman has
\nencouraged civilians to help the police with their crime-fighting
\nefforts. Civilians were permitted to arrest people they suspected
\nto be drug traffickers and users, he said last week. (jun)<\/p>",
