North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution is pushing for an increase in\nfree halal certification incentives for micro, small, and medium\nenterprises (MSMEs) from 1,000 to 5,000 in 2027.<\/p>\n
The move, he said, is considered important to accelerate the\nstrengthening of the halal ecosystem while enhancing the competitiveness\nof North Sumatra\u2019s local products in the global market.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year, 1,000 halal certifications have been given to MSMEs. It\ncan be said to be large, quite decent. If it is said to be small, it is\ncertainly small,\u201d Bobby said while attending the opening of the North\nSumatra Halal Fest 2026 in Medan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Bobby noted that of the 1.4 million MSME units recorded in North\nSumatra in 2025, only around 100,000 business actors currently hold\nhalal certification.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is still homework of around 1.3 million more that must be\nhalal-certified. Therefore, I am asking for an increase to at least\n5,000 MSMEs receiving free halal incentives per year starting next\nyear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also mentioned that the halal industry and halal products are\nincreasingly in demand among the public, both nationally and\nglobally.<\/p>\n
This condition presents a significant opportunity for MSME actors in\nNorth Sumatra to expand their markets while simultaneously improving\nproduct competitiveness.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to continue increasing halal certification for MSMEs in\nNorth Sumatra so that more regional flagship products meet halal\nstandards, have competitiveness, and can become drivers of North\nSumatra\u2019s economy,\u201d Bobby said.<\/p>\n
Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for North Sumatra,\nAmeriza M Moessa, said that the development of the sharia economy has\ngreat potential to support North Sumatra\u2019s economic growth.<\/p>\n
The sharia economy, he said, does not only encompass sharia finance\nbut also the halal value chain, including halal food and beverages,\nfashion, cosmetics, Muslim-friendly tourism, agriculture, the creative\nindustry, MSMEs, and the pesantren economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe sharia economy is no longer merely a limited sector but has\nbecome part of real economic activity. It has the potential to be one of\nthe increasingly important sources of economic growth, including in\nNorth Sumatra,\u201d Ameriza said.<\/p>\n
Head of the Halal Product Assurance Agency, Haikal Hassan, said that\nNorth Sumatra has great potential as it is supported by many business\nactors and MSMEs.<\/p>\n
Haikal said that the number of halal products from North Sumatra is\nbelieved to open wider market opportunities as the halal lifestyle\ncontinues to grow.<\/p>\n
