Governor plays down electric car proposal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The governor said yesterday that the city has
\nyet to receive a proposal on alternative mode of public
\ntransport.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja was responding to reports on a
\nfour-wheeled electric car proposed by a private company for use
\nin residential areas.<\/p>\n
He declined to say whether the electric car was being
\nconsidered to replace the three-wheeled bajaj.<\/p>\n
\"We only want to serve the public with comfortable and safe
\ntransport,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
The city is phasing out three-wheeled public transportation
\nmeans. Becak were removed from the city following a December 1990
\ncity regulation and now the administration is phasing out bemo.<\/p>\n
Vehicles like bajaj would be gradually replaced by other
\nvehicles but Surjadi did not mention a specific date.<\/p>\n
\"Bajaj can transport people but is it safe? Is it
\ncomfortable?\" Surjadi queried.<\/p>\n
There is a concept to replace bajaj, he added, but whether by
\nan electric car or another vehicle has yet to be discussed.<\/p>\n
\"We appreciate the offer from the company but the
\nadministration should not be pushed into accepting it,\" he said.<\/p>\n
PT Wahana Bakti Utama, a company under the Army's Yayasan Eka
\nPaksi, tested its four-wheeled electronic car Friday at City
\nHall. It proposed the vehicle as a cheaper alternative to
\nmotorcycle taxis (ojek) in residential areas.<\/p>\n
Soeroso, the company's operational manager said earlier that
\nthe pollution-free electric car was economical and safer than
\ntransport using gasoline.<\/p>\n
He said the electric car, named \"molek\" (mobil electric), took
\nRp 10 per kilometer to run while a gasoline-powered car would
\ncost Rp 58 per km.<\/p>\n
The 36-voltage power car has a speed of 40 km per hour. The
\nbattery needs to be recharged every two hours and has enough
\npower to cover 80 km. The car is a modification of a Hyundai golf
\ncart and can carry eight passengers.<\/p>\n
Agus Pramono, the company's general manager, said the firm
\nplans to try out the electric car in the Bumi Serpong Damai
\ncomplex in Serpong, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Officials said the city would have to conduct several studies
\non the proposed vehicle before reaching a decision. (11\/ste)<\/p>",
