Governor orders probe of attack<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Governor Sutiyoso said he has ordered officials in East
\nJakarta to investigate an incident in Cawang, East Jakarta, on
\nSunday that left three people injured, including a cameraman from
\na private television station.<\/p>\n
"I have told them to investigate. We must take action against
\nthese public order officers if they are guilty," Sutiyoso said on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Three people, including off-duty TV7 cameraman Rahmat Taufik
\nSiregar, claim they were hospitalized after being assaulted by
\npublic order officers. Rahmat said he was attacked after asking
\nthe officers not to throw rocks at street vendors.<\/p>\n
Two other people, Maryadi and Chandra, who attempted to come
\nto the aid of Rahmat, were also injured in the incident. Rahmat
\nhas filed a police report.<\/p>\n
The public order officers were evicting street vendors from in
\nfront of the Indonesian Christian University.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso, however, defended the public order officers, saying
\nthey were only defending themselves.<\/p>\n
"I have received a report from the East Jakarta major that the
\nsecurity officers only tried to defend themselves from the
\nvendors, who attacked them," said Sutiyoso.--JP<\/p>",
