Governor declares war on street vendors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja vowed yesterday to
\ncontinue the fight against street vendors operating illegally
\nalong strategic spots throughout the city.<\/p>\n
The governor said that he has ordered the city's five mayors
\nto keep an eye on vendors' operations because their presence is
\nconsidered to disturb the public. Many vendors recklessly change
\nthe function of public facilities, including pavements, bus
\nshelters and pedestrian bridges, to suit their operations.<\/p>\n
\"The city administration has established several locations to
\naccommodate street vendors,\" Surjadi said at the opening of a new
\nmarket for street vendors in Kramatjati, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
With the provision of these facilities, there should be no
\nreason for the vendors to operate indiscriminately, he said.<\/p>\n
He also said that the development of a new market for street
\nvendors is aimed at improving the informal sector and small-scale
\nbusinesses in the city.<\/p>\n
He urged the street vendors, who had just moved into the new
\nmarket, to maintain its sanitation and cleanliness.<\/p>\n
The vendors are allowed to stay at the market for one year
\nwithout paying fees on the condition that they maintain
\nsanitation there, the governor said, adding that after one year
\nthey are obliged to pay a fee of Rp 600 each, per day.<\/p>\n
Capacity<\/p>\n
The new market has the capacity to accommodate about 461
\nstreet vendors, who previously did business along Jl. Nusa I,
\nKramatjati, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Head of the City Small-scale Business Improvement Task Force,
\nNyoman Djendria, said that the Kramatjati vendor market is part
\nof 361 projects built in the city, with a combined capacity of
\naccommodating 12,939 street vendors.<\/p>\n
Nyoman said that, according to data at his office, there are
\nabout 54,000 street vendors still operating illegally along city
\nstreets.<\/p>\n
He also said that the provision of markets, for street
\nvendors, is part of a program to improve the small-scale business
\nsector in the city. The other steps are conducted by providing
