        "content": "<p>JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing\n(PUPR) is preparing six main strategies to anticipate the potential for\na prolonged dry season in 2026, which is expected to arrive earlier and\nlast longer than normal conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Director General of Water Resources at the Ministry of PUPR,\nAdenan Rasyid, stated that these mitigation steps are crucial to\nimplement early, given their broad impacts on water, food, and\nenvironmental resilience.<\/p>\n<p>This was conveyed by Adenan during the Coordination Meeting on\nStrategies for Mitigating and Addressing the Impacts of the Prolonged\nDry Season in 2026 in Jakarta on Monday (13\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2026 dry season is expected to arrive earlier, last longer, and\nhave a higher level of dryness than normal conditions. This situation\nposes a serious threat to water, food, and environmental resilience,\nnecessitating planned, measured, and integrated mitigation efforts,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Based on an analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics\nAgency (BMKG), the 2026 dry season is expected to coincide with the El\nNi\u00f1o phenomenon starting in July with weak to moderate intensity and a\n50-80 percent likelihood.<\/p>\n<p>The drought impacts are anticipated to spread across various sectors,\nfrom reduced river flows, diminished reservoir volumes, to depleted\ngroundwater reserves.<\/p>\n<p>In the agricultural sector, this could disrupt planting patterns,\nwhile environmentally, the risk of forest and land fires, particularly\nin peat areas, is also increasing.<\/p>\n<p>To anticipate this, the Ministry of PUPR has established six main\nstrategies: optimising water storage operations through priority-based\nallocation and real-time data; strengthening irrigation networks to\nminimise water loss; enhancing the readiness of facilities and\ninfrastructure to ensure all equipment is operational; adjusting\nplanting patterns according to water availability and climate\nconditions; accelerating the construction of water resources\ninfrastructure such as dams and irrigation, as well as alternative water\nsources; and optimising the functions of all water structures.<\/p>\n<p>Adenan emphasised that these mitigation efforts require\ncross-sectoral collaboration, not just the responsibility of one\nagency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot avoid the dry season, but we can ensure its impacts do not\ndevelop into a crisis.
