The central government has taken several steps to save energy amid\nthe crisis caused by the war raging in the Middle East. Policies ranging\nfrom work from home (WFH) to budget efficiency are being implemented to\ncut costs.<\/p>\n
This government decision was conveyed on Tuesday (31 March 2026) by\nCoordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto. These policies\nwill take effect in April 2026.<\/p>\n
Here are the steps taken by the government:<\/p>\n
Airlangga conveyed the government\u2019s decision regarding working from\nhome or WFH for civil servants for one day per week. That one day of WFH\nwill apply every Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe implementation of work from home for civil servants in central\nand regional agencies for one working day per week, namely every\nFriday,\u201d said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto\nduring a virtual press conference.<\/p>\n
Airlangga stated that this policy only applies to civil servants\n(ASN). The policy also aims to encourage digital-based service\ngovernance.<\/p>\n
Airlangga then explained the reason for choosing Friday for WFH for\ncivil servants. He said the policy has been calculated based on\npost-COVID handling experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy Friday? Because some ministries have already done that, working\nfour days a week with applications, this post-COVID,\u201d said\nAirlangga.<\/p>\n
Then, Airlangga also revealed that there will be a WFH policy for\nprivate sector workers. However, the policy will be adjusted to the\nneeds of each business sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe implementation of work from home for the private sector will be\nfurther regulated in a Circular from the Minister of Manpower,\u201d said\nAirlangga Hartarto during the press conference.<\/p>\n
Airlangga stated that the WFH schedule will start from 1 April and\nwill differ for each business sector. The policy follows the\ncharacteristics and needs of each business sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile still considering the characteristics and needs of each\nbusiness sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Next, Airlangga mentioned that the government is also regulating the\nuse of official vehicles. The government will limit the use of official\nvehicles to 50 per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cEfficiency in mobility, including limiting official vehicles to 50\nper cent except for operational and electric vehicles,\u201d said Airlangga\nHartarto.<\/p>\n
Alongside this, he encouraged the use of public transport. In this\nway, he said the policy could reduce the use of fuel oil (BBM).<\/p>\n

In addition, Airlangga restricted official travel for domestic and\ninternational purposes. Travel abroad is even limited to 70 per\ncent.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen efficiency in domestic official travel up to 50 per cent and\nabroad up to 70 per cent,\u201d said Airlangga.<\/p>\n
Airlangga stated that this policy will be regulated in a Circular\nfrom the Minister of Home Affairs. \u201cThis will be regulated by a Circular\nfrom the Minister of Home Affairs,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n
This policy will take effect from 1 April. The government emphasises\nthat the implemented efficiencies do not reduce the performance and\nservices of civil servants to the public.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the government is even carrying out efficiencies on\nPresident Prabowo Subianto\u2019s priority programme, namely the Free\nNutritious Meals (MBG). The policy is that MBG will only be provided for\nfive days per week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe government is encouraging the optimisation of the MBG programme,\nand this programme is directed towards providing fresh food for five\ndays a week,\u201d said Airlangga.<\/p>\n
However, Airlangga mentioned that the distribution of MBG must\nconsider several exceptions, from 3T (Underdeveloped, Frontier,\nOutermost) areas to areas with high stunting rates. Airlangga said this\npolicy saves the state budget by up to Rp 20 trillion.<\/p>\n
\u201cStill considering exceptions such as for dormitories, 3T areas, and\nareas with high stunting rates. The potential savings from this activity\nreach Rp 20 trillion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Airlangga added that the various efficiency steps taken by the\ngovernment are part of structural transformation towards an efficient\neconomy. He also asked all of society to support it.<\/p>\n
