Government welcomes withdrawal of lawsuit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad and Bank
\nIndonesia Governor J. Soedradjad Djiwandono welcomed yesterday a
\nmove by Bank Andromeda to drop its lawsuit against them over the
\nbank's closure.<\/p>\n
"We welcome the decision to withdraw the lawsuit against the
\ngovernment's decision to revoke the license of Bank Andromeda,"
\nMar'ie said in a statement from Tokyo, a copy of which was made
\navailable here.<\/p>\n
Bank Andromeda is one of 16 banks whose licenses were revoked
\nby the government on Nov. 1, the first move in a reform package
\nbacked by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to clean up the
\nfinancial sector.<\/p>\n
Last week, President Soeharto's second son, Bambang
\nTrihatmodjo -- a 25 percent shareholder of the bank -- sued
\nMar'ie and Soedradjad through the Jakarta State Administrative
\nCourt to challenge the closure of his bank.<\/p>\n
Andromeda's move was followed by Bank Jakarta, owned by
\nSoeharto's half brother Probosutedjo, with a similar legal
\nchallenge to the closure of his bank.<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo has reportedly refused to sign documents on the
\nclosure of his bank.<\/p>\n
But Bambang, on behalf of Bank Andromeda's shareholders,
\nannounced Wednesday that the bank had withdrawn its lawsuit for
\nthe national interest.<\/p>\n
"This wise decision will smoothen the next process, and this
\nis in line with the government's call, like that made before the
\nHouse of Representatives' plenary session on Nov. 10," Mar'ie
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
When speaking before the plenary session, Mar'ie called on the
\nowners, management and employees of the closed banks to cooperate
\nwith the government in liquidating their banks.<\/p>\n
"We especially appreciate and agree with Bambang Trihatmodjo's
\nstatement that in deciding anything, we must consider the
\nnational interest first," Mar'ie said.<\/p>\n
"This becomes more meaningful because all of the nation's
\npotential should be used to make the national economy recover
\nquickly," he added.<\/p>\n
In a similar tone, Soedradjad said he appreciated Bank
\nAndromeda's decision to withdraw the suit and the press statement
\nby Bambang Trihatmodjo.<\/p>\n
He described the decision as wise and based on an awareness
\nthat the government's policy in banking was for the sake of the
\nnation.<\/p>\n
"This will be very helpful in efforts to restructure the
\nnational banking system, which will, in the end, have a positive
\neffect on the restoration of national economic stability," he
