Government told to increase protection for women<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): While dismissing the possibility of completely
\npreventing women from going out at night, the Women's Solidarity
\nfor Human Rights (SP) on Thursday called on the government's
\nseriousness to provide safety for women traveling at night.<\/p>\n
\"The government should restore the people's safety, especially
\nwomen, who have activities at night,\" Nunuk Murniati, SP
\ncoordinator, said in a written statement released to the press.<\/p>\n
She was commenting on last week's case of the vicious rape of
\ntwenty-three-year-old Mhr alias Ruth, in a Kotas (Koperasi Taksi
\nSepakat) no. 154 with registration no. B 1714 MX.<\/p>\n
The South Jakarta Police have arrested four men, identified as
\nRusdi, Koming, Iwan and Suhadi.<\/p>\n
Nunuk said the government should impose heavy punishment on
\nrapists.<\/p>\n
She said the government should also strengthen its supervision
\nof taxi firms.<\/p>\n
\"The government should monitor the operational activities of
\ntaxi firms, including their services to consumers and the
\ndrivers' wages.<\/p>\n
\"The government must also take stern measures against any
\nviolations committed by the taxi firms,\" said Nunuk.<\/p>\n
She said last week's vicious rape occurred because the
\ngovernment had neglected to seriously monitor the city's public
\ntransportation.<\/p>\n
\"The government has so far ignored supervision on taxi
\nservice. The government did not learn from experience that many
\nrape cases occurred in taxis in the past,\" she said.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Nunuk called on the taxi firms to improve
\ntheir services to customers.<\/p>\n
She also called on the taxi firms to seriously follow up on
\nany passengers' complaints.<\/p>\n
Nunuk said she disagreed with the calls that women should not
\ngo out at night to avoid from raped.<\/p>\n
\"People should not blame such rape cases on the victims.<\/p>\n
\"They should instead reprimand the government, the party which
\nshould be held responsible for the case,\" she said. (asa\/imn)<\/p>",
