Government to set up anticorruption body<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government is to set up an anticorruption
\nbody within two weeks as part of its commitment to the
\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF), Attorney General Marzuki
\nDarusman said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"We will be setting up a joint anticorruption team within two
\nweeks, which will be the embryo of the independent anticorruption
\nbody,\" Marzuki told journalists.<\/p>\n
The team is expected to involve police and prosecutors, among
\nothers. Marzuki did not elaborate further.<\/p>\n
He was speaking after a cabinet meeting convened to discuss
\nthe progress of the measures promised to the IMF in the letter of
\nintent signed by government in January.<\/p>\n
In the letter of intent, the attorney general must form a
\n\"coordinated investigative team\" by April 8, that will have
\nindependent authority to probe and bring corruption cases to
\njustice.<\/p>\n
In February, Marzuki said the independent team would be
\n\"reporting directly to the President, and that gradually all
\ncases of corruption will be handled by this agency.\"<\/p>\n
Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, Amien Rais, has
\ncalled on the government to establish an independent antigraft
\ncommission and suggested that it take as a model, the one
\noperating in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
President Abdurrahman Wahid has made corruption -- a rampant
\nand deep-rooted problem during 32-year rule of former president
