The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has announced\nthat Indonesia will import 3kg Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinders.\nThis plan is part of the government\u2019s strategy to introduce an\nalternative to 3kg LPG.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe technology involved is highly advanced. Currently, the\ncapability to produce this technology exists abroad; we do not yet have\nit domestically,\u201d stated the Director General of Oil and Gas, Laode\nSulaeman, as reported by Antara on Monday, 18 May 2026.<\/p>\n
Regarding the potential source of these cylinders, Laode noted that\nIndonesia is currently inclined to import from China. \u201cThere are many\ncountries, but so far, we are looking at China,\u201d Laode said.<\/p>\n
He further explained that the importation of CNG cylinders is\nintended only for the initial phase of implementation, targeting\nhouseholds. Once the use of CNG for households reaches a massive scale,\nIndonesia aims to produce CNG cylinders domestically. \u201cYes, that is the\nplan. It is for the initial stage,\u201d added Laode.<\/p>\n
The government is currently preparing the implementation stages of\nCNG as an alternative to 3kg LPG to meet household gas requirements.\nLaode aims for CNG to begin replacing 3kg LPG starting this year to\nreduce dependence on energy imports.<\/p>\n
This plan was previously outlined by the Minister of Energy and\nMineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia. He noted that the use of compressed\nnatural gas is not a new technology, as it is already utilised in the\nhotel and restaurant sectors, as well as in the Free Nutritious Meal\n(MBG) programme. However, its use has thus far been limited to\nlarge-capacity cylinders exceeding 10-20 kilograms.<\/p>\n
He assessed that if trial results are deemed feasible, the government\nwill open opportunities for a gradual conversion from LPG to CNG for\nhousehold needs. According to Bahlil, CNG offers a significant advantage\nbecause all raw materials are available domestically, including abundant\nnatural gas sources.
