The government is strengthening the national food reserves to face\nthe potential extreme El Nino or \u2018Godzilla El Nino\u2019. This is to maintain\nthe stability of food supply and prices as well as to anticipate the\nimpact of prolonged drought.<\/p>\n
Deputy Director of Food Availability and Stabilisation at the\nNational Food Agency (Bapanas), I Gusti Ketut Astawa, revealed that the\nGodzilla El Nino climate phenomenon, predicted to be strengthened by the\npositive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) phenomenon, is estimated to cause a\nlonger and drier dry season in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe prediction of Godzilla El Nino has become the government\u2019s\nattention. We, in accordance with the instructions of the Head of\nBapanas, Mr Andi Amran Sulaiman, are ensuring that the resilience of the\ngovernment food reserve (CPP) stock continues to be strengthened so that\nwhen needed, it can be immediately distributed to help the community,\u201d\nhe said in Jakarta on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.<\/p>\n
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) states that both\nphenomena are likely to occur simultaneously starting from April\nonwards. \u201cAs an anticipation in the food sector, the government is\nensuring that the resilience of the government food reserve (CPP) stock\ncontinues to be strengthened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He emphasised that with the solid CPP stock prioritising the\nabsorption of domestic production, when weather anomalies occur, food\nintervention programmes can be implemented quickly and accurately.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the Bapanas report as of 25 March, the stock of strategic staple\nfoods which are CPP and managed by state-owned food enterprises, both\nPerum Bulog and ID FOOD, is still adequate with rice as the CPP with the\nlargest stock,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, other CPPs are also continuously strengthened such as\ncorn, cooking oil, consumption sugar, beef\/buffalo meat, chicken meat,\nand chicken eggs.<\/p>\n
The current CPP rice stock at Bulog totals 4.08 million tonnes. This\nachievement has rapidly increased by 77.8 percent compared to the CPP\nrice stock condition at the end of March last year, which was still at\n2.29 million tonnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the supply comes from domestic production because Bulog has\ncarried out rice absorption equivalent to 1.24 million tonnes from early\n2026 until today,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Then, the CPP corn stock is around 144,000 tonnes, most of which\ncomes from the absorption of domestic corn harvests.
