Government searching for assets of terrorists<\/p>\n

Amidst doubt over the Indonesian government's willingness to
\nfight terrorism, high-ranking security officials contended that
\nthey were taking measures to fulfill the United Nations Security
\nCouncil resolution on freezing assets that allegedly belong to
\nterrorist groups.<\/p>\n
National Police Chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro said on Sunday
\nthat his office is coordinating with the International Police
\n(Interpol) concerning possible terrorist assets in the country.<\/p>\n
\"We are coordinating with Interpol. We are also processing
\nmatters with related agencies in the country,\" Bimantoro said,
\nafter seeing President Megawati Soekarnoputri off to attend the
\nASEAN summit in Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>\n
The four-star general added that the police would ask the
\ncentral bank to freeze terrorists' accounts or assets should the
\norganization violate Indonesian law or ignore information from
\nInterpol.<\/p>\n
\"We are waiting for coordination with Interpol on such
\nmatters,\" he said, adding that so far he had yet to receive any
\ninformation of terrorist groups in the country.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is considered reluctant to deal with terrorist
\nissues and is a country in which extremists have organizational
\nlinks with global terrorist groups.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the Governor of the Central Bank Syahril Sabirin was
\nreported to have said that he could not freeze any assets
\nallegedly belonging to terrorist groups without a request from
\nthe national police.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs
\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono contended that the government would
\nfulfill the UN Security Council resolution on freezing terrorist
\nassets.<\/p>\n
\"We are still working on the issue and we will fulfill the
\nresolution because Indonesia is a member country of the United
\nNations,\" he remarked.<\/p>\n
The minister also said that the Attorney General's Office had
\nsent a letter to the central bank to pave ways for coordination
\non the issue, while the national police was working with
\nInterpol.<\/p>",
