JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government has recorded the acceleration of\n5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technology development as a\nstrategic step to realise the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045.<\/p>\n
Both technologies are positioned as critical national infrastructure\nthat will serve as the main foundation for future digital economic\ngrowth.<\/p>\n
Director General of Digital Infrastructure at the Ministry of\nCommunication and Digital (Komdigi), Wayan Toni Supriyanto, stated that\ndigital transformation is no longer merely a sectoral agenda but has\nbecome a primary pillar of national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia has set a grand vision of Golden Indonesia 2045, namely to\nbecome a developed country with a strong, inclusive, and sustainable\neconomy. In that context, digital transformation is no longer just a\nsectoral agenda but has become a primary pillar of national\ndevelopment,\u201d Wayan said at the opening of the IndoTelko Forum seminar\nin Jakarta on Wednesday (29\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, we realise that connectivity alone is not enough. That is,\nconnectivity by itself is insufficient; we must go further in building a\ndigital ecosystem that is not only connected but also intelligent,\nadaptive, and sovereign,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Within that framework, 5G serves as the foundation for connectivity\nwith high speed and large capacity. This technology enables various\ninnovations in the industrial, health, education, and smart city\ndevelopment sectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this context, 5G and Artificial Intelligence or AI must be placed\nas critical national infrastructure. 5G provides a connectivity\nfoundation with high speed, low latency, and large capacity that enables\nvarious new innovations,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n
However, he reminded that the main challenge is not only in building\nthe technology but also in utilising it to ensure it is inclusive,\nsecure, and provides positive impacts for society.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, our challenge is not only to build the technology but to\nensure that its utilisation is inclusive, secure, and provides real\nbenefits for society,\u201d Wayan continued.<\/p>\n
The need for large-scale computing, massive data storage, and\nintegration with cloud and edge computing technologies is expected to\ncontinue increasing. Therefore, the government is encouraging the\ndevelopment of national data centres as strategic digital assets.<\/p>\n
Not only that, the government is also striving to promote the\nequitable distribution of data centre development so that it is not\nconcentrated in western Indonesia. Expansion to eastern regions is one\nof the focuses to support equitable digital economic growth.<\/p>\n
In addition to the aspect of equity, data centre development is also\ndirected towards adopting the green data centre concept to ensure energy\nefficiency and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he emphasised that the success of digital transformation\ndepends on the quality of human resources (HR). Therefore, the\ngovernment continues to promote the development of digital talent\nthrough various training programmes, reskilling, and collaborations with\nindustry and educational institutions.<\/p>\n
