Government pledges to revitalize ailing tourism sector<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gede Ardika
\nsaid on Tuesday that he would form a cooperation forum to help
\nrevitalize the country's ailing tourism sector.<\/p>\n
Ardika said the forum would involve representatives from
\nrelated government institutions and the private sector.<\/p>\n
\"The forum will be established to ensure the continuation of
\nthe previous program despite the change in the structural
\nformation of the ministry,\" he said at a media conference after
\nofficially being installed in his new post, taking over from the
\nformer state minister of arts and tourism Djaelani Hidayat.<\/p>\n
He said he would continue with the programs carried out by his
\npredecessor, at least until the end of the year, and eliminate
\nthe misconception that a different program would come with the
\nchange in minister.<\/p>\n
During the Soeharto era, culture was put under the ministry of
\neducation and culture, while tourism was under the ministry of
\ntourism, post and telecommunications.<\/p>\n
When B.J. Habibie took over, tourism was overseen by the
\noffice of the state minister of tourism, arts and culture, while
\npost and telecommunications were merged into the ministry of
\ncommunications.<\/p>\n
At the same event, Ardika supported his predecessor's opinion
\nthat the tourism target of 5.1 million foreign visitors entering
\nthe country would be met by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
\"I'm certain the target will be reached, especially after we
\nshow the world we can uphold democracy and manage our differences
\nwithout violence,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Between the period of January to July, 2.8 million foreign
\nvisitors entered the country, with 2.33 million coming through
\nthe 13 points of entry.<\/p>\n
The 13 points of entry into Indonesia consist of airports in
\nJakarta, Bali, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, East Java, Central
\nJava, West Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi; sea
\nports in Batam, Jakarta and Riau; and a land-border crossing in
\nEntikong, West Kalimantan. (10)<\/p>",
