Government plans to sell 15% stake in Sucofindo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government will sell about 15 percent of its
\nshares in state-owned surveying company PT Sucofindo as part of
\nthe company's privatization plan, a senior executive of the
\ncompany said.<\/p>\n
Sucofindo's president Didie B. Tedjosumirat said here on
\nThursday that the privatization would be launched in October this
\nyear.<\/p>\n
\"We are currently in the process of appointing a legal
\nconsultant who will ensure that the privatization process is done
\naccording to the law,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The government owns a 95 percent stake in Sucofindo, with
\nGeneva-based Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) owning the
\nremaining 5 percent.<\/p>\n
Didie acknowledged that priority would be given to SGS, as
\nSucofindo's long-time strategic partner, to obtain the 15 percent
\nshares to be divested by the government and would only offer them
\nto other investors if SGS declined.<\/p>\n
Many investors had shown an interest in obtaining the shares,
\nincluding some from France and Switzerland, he added, without
\ndisclosing any names.<\/p>\n
The company's privatization plan was prepared in early 1998
\nbut its realization has been delayed due to a change in the
\ngovernment's privatization team.<\/p>\n
Separately, Minister of Industry and Trade Luhut B. Panjaitan
\nauthorized Sucofindo on Thursday to issue a certification for
\ngeneral auto workshops, a certification program launched to
\nensure more protection for consumers.<\/p>\n
Sucofindo was also assigned to monitor certified auto
\nworkshops and to give sanctions should they operate out of line
\nwith their classification criteria, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The ministerial decree dated June 15, 2001, also stipulated
\nthat Sucofindo inform the public on the classifications of auto
\nshops and to develop an information system that could be accessed
\nby both auto workshops and the public.<\/p>\n
The surveyor company should also publish a monthly report on
\nclassification updates and the results of its monitoring process
\nto the ministry.<\/p>\n
Auto workshops are classified based on quality, mechanical
\nexpertise, facilities, and information management.<\/p>\n
They are also divided into workshop types depending on the
\nkinds of auto repairs and maintenance they are able to provide.<\/p>\n
Type A workshops, for instance, provide routine maintenance,
\nminor and major repairs and body and chassis repairs.<\/p>\n
The classification will be done in stages and be formalized by
\nthe directorate general of metal, machineries, electronics, and
\nvarious industries of the ministry of industry and trade. (tnt)<\/p>",
