        "content": "<p>Director of Institutions at the Ministry of Higher Education,\nScience, and Technology, Muhammad Najib, stated that the ministry will\nconsider an ongoing scheme for the Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP\nKuliah) or during the middle of studies. Previously, the KIP-K\nscholarship could only be accessed by students at the beginning of\nuniversity. Meanwhile, during the mid-study period, many students\nexperience economic difficulties, making it hard to pay single tuition\nfees (UKT). Najib said the ministry will consider this by discussing the\nproposal with the House of Representatives (DPR). \u201cWe must discuss it\nwith the DPR, whether it is possible for the ongoing scheme to also be\nfunded by KIP Kuliah,\u201d he said when met at the Ministry\u2019s office in\nSouth Jakarta on Monday, 13 April 2026. Najib said the ongoing KIP-K\nscheme should be implemented. \u201cIt should be possible. We will try to\nexplore it further,\u201d he stated. For example, at Universitas Padjadjaran\n(Unpad). The Unpad Student Executive Body recorded more than 100 reports\nfrom students regarding difficulties in paying UKT. Head of the Advocacy\nand Student Welfare Department of Unpad BEM, Kezya Diynar, said most\nstudents struggling to pay UKT are due to changes in their family\neconomic conditions. There are parents who have lost jobs, and some with\nreduced incomes. Unpad\u2019s Director of Student Affairs, Inu Isnaeni Sidiq,\nalso confirmed the reasons for many students defaulting on UKT.\nGenerally, he said, defaulting students come from families where parents\nwork in the formal sector. \u201cTheir incomes are unstable. We have seen\nthis phenomenon since 2020 during COVID,\u201d he said on Sunday, 12 April\n2026. A similar situation is experienced at Institut Teknologi Bandung\n(ITB). UKT arrears occur repeatedly every semester. ITB Student\nPresident Farrel Faiz Firmansyah said some students even have to rely on\nalumni assistance to settle tuition fees. The situation at Universitas\nGadjah Mada (UGM) is not much different. UGM Vice Rector Arie Sujito\nsaid the deteriorating national economy also affects parents\u2019 ability to\npay for education.
