Government considering long-distance teaching<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government is studying the possibility of
\nintroducing long-distance teaching, taking advantage of
\nsatellite communication, to reach children who are currently
\ndenied secondary education for lack of space.<\/p>\n
Arief E. Sadiman of the Ministry of Education and Culture said
\nyesterday that there are currently 6.2 million children of
\nsecondary school age who are not attending schools, either
\nbecause they could not be accommodated or because they live in
\nremote places where there are no schools.<\/p>\n
Arief, the director of the ministry's Center for Communication
\nTechnology, said that the government could only build 10,000 new
\nclasses for junior high schools a year.<\/p>\n
The government extended the compulsory education scheme by
\nthree years in 1994 to cover the three years in junior high
\nschools as well as the first six years in primary schools, for
\nchildren aged between six and 15.<\/p>\n
Arief said Indonesia is studying the correspondent school
\nconcept that has been developed in Australia, and expanding it to
\nuse satellite communication facilities.<\/p>\n
Under the \"distant learning\" system, classes will be given
\nthrough television broadcast with the help of satellite, he said.<\/p>\n
He said the government recognizes that the method involves the
\nuse of costly equipment and that therefore its success hinges on
\nthe availability of financial resources. (01)<\/p>",
