The Indonesian government's ability to communicate openly and accurately is as critical as field implementation for the success of major national programmes. The free nutritious meal initiative exemplifies how a policy's effectiveness can be undermined by digital misinformation and 'communication barriers'. Without a credible information space, speculation and biased narratives quickly fill the void, distorting public understanding.

Any space not filled by credible information will be easily filled by
speculation, prejudice, and narratives that distance the public from the
substance of the real issue.

Jakarta - National priority programmes are almost always under
intense public scrutiny. The public assesses that, besides using a large
amount of state budget, these programmes also directly affect people’s
lives.

In such a situation, the success of a policy is determined not only
by the quality of its implementation in the field but also by the
government’s ability to manage information in an open, accurate, and
consistent manner.

The Free Nutritious Meals programme serves as an interesting example.
As one of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship initiatives, the
programme is designed to strengthen the quality of Indonesia’s human
resources by meeting the nutritional needs of schoolchildren. In the
long term, this programme is expected to be an investment in human
development while strengthening national food security.

However, like other large programmes, it does not escape various
challenges. Aside from technical and governance issues, a no less
serious risk has emerged: communication barriers, misinformation, and
the development of narratives that are not entirely based on facts.

In the digital era, information moves far faster than the
clarification process. A Reuters Institute report shows that social
media has now become one of the main sources of public information. At
the same time, digital platform algorithms often create echo chambers, a
situation where someone only receives information that reinforces views
they already hold. Under these conditions, a single piece of incomplete
information can develop into a public perception that is difficult to
correct.

Therefore, the current government communication challenge is not
merely about conveying information but ensuring that circulating
information possesses credibility, adequate context, and is easily
understood by the public.

Calibration of communication accountability.
",
