        "content": "<p>Government calls for lawful elections<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government called yesterday on all parties<br>\ncompeting in the May 29 general election to abide by all the<br>\nrules.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Home Affairs Moh. Yogie SM said the three<br>\npolitical groupings, the public and the election committee needed<br>\nto understand all the recent regulations issued by the government<br>\nto avoid committing either criminal, administrative or political<br>\noffenses.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The government doesn&apos;t want to see a certain contestant gain<br>\nmajor votes at the expense of the people,&quot; Yogie was quoted by<br>\nAntara.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Such a risk could be avoided if the three contestants stick<br>\nto their recent accord (to run the election in an orderly<br>\nmanner).&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Minister of home affairs ex-officio chairs the election<br>\ncommittee. Yogie was speaking at the 24th anniversary celebration<br>\nof the Indonesian Democratic Party in Tentena, Central Sulawesi<br>\nwith Soerjadi, the party chairman approved by the government.<\/p>\n<p>The government issued last month a Presidential Decree which<br>\nrecommended each contestant only be allowed to campaign via<br>\npublic assemblies, media broadcasts, leaflets, flyers and other<br>\nprinted matter during the official campaign period between April<br>\n29 and May 23.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Singgih, also chairman of the Inspection<br>\nBoard of the National Election Committee, said while announcing<br>\nthe decree that street rallies were banned.<\/p>\n<p>The government insists that mass rallies during past elections<br>\nfrequently turned into brawls.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will repeatedly urge the three contestants to use legal,<br>\nrational methods during rallies,&quot; Yogie said.<\/p>\n<p>During the election, ruling political grouping Golkar, the<br>\nUnited Development Party and the Indonesian Democratic Party will<br>\nbe vying for 425 of 500 seats in the House of Representatives.<br>\nThe remaining 75 seats will go to members of the Armed Forces who<br>\ndo not vote.<\/p>\n<p>The general election will be followed by the general assembly<br>\nof the People&apos;s Consultative Assembly which will name the<br>\nPresident and Vice President for the 1998-2003 term.
