Jakarta \u2014 The Indonesian government is accelerating bioenergy\ndevelopment based on agricultural commodities such as cassava, palm oil,\nsugarcane, and maize as part of efforts to accelerate national energy\nself-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
Coordinator Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) said the\nacceleration was being carried out on the instruction of the President\nto strengthen national energy independence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have just completed a coordination meeting, and on the\nPresident\u2019s orders, acceleration of energy self-sufficiency is\nnecessary,\u201d Zulhas said after a limited coordination meeting in Jakarta\non Friday.<\/p>\n
He explained that one of the steps the government is preparing is to\nexpand the development of cassava crops that will be processed into\nethanol as alternative fuel.<\/p>\n
\u201cCassava plants will be converted into ethanol. Then acceleration of\npalm oil development, with some for biofuel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zulhas added that other commodities such as sugarcane and maize will\nalso be utilised as raw materials for ethanol production in the\ndevelopment of national bioenergy.<\/p>\n

The government has not yet provided further details on production\ntargets for bioenergy from these agricultural commodities. However, the\nutilisation of cassava, sugarcane, maize, and palm oil for alternative\nfuel is described as a step to strengthen energy diversification and\nreduce dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is\nplanning to implement 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by\n2028 as an effort to reduce petrol imports.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Agriculture is also projecting maize production in\n2026 to reach approximately 18 million tonnes of dried kernels,\nsupported by increased yields of around 4.18 per cent in the first\nquarter of the year.<\/p>\n
In addition to bioenergy development, the government is also\naccelerating the construction of national electricity infrastructure in\naccordance with the instructions of President Prabowo Subianto,\nincluding the development of solar power plants (PLTS) of up to 100\ngigawatts (GW).<\/p>\n
